Plenty of small businesses start with a single pickup insured on the owner's personal policy. That can work for a while, but personal auto policies are written for commuting and household driving. Business use is often limited, defined narrowly, or excluded for certain activities.

Signs a vehicle belongs on a commercial policy

  • The vehicle is titled or leased to the business. Many personal insurers will not write a vehicle owned by an LLC or corporation.
  • Employees drive it. A personal policy is built around household members, not a rotating crew.
  • It carries tools, materials or products for paid work. Upfitted vans with shelving and ladder racks are a common trigger.
  • You deliver goods or carry people for a fee. Many personal policies exclude this outright.
  • A client asks for a certificate naming them as additional insured. That is usually only available on a commercial policy.

What happens if you get it wrong

If an insurer decides a vehicle was used in a way the personal policy does not cover, it may deny a claim or cancel the policy. The business can then face a lawsuit with no insurer defending it. Telling the insurer how the vehicle is really used is the simplest protection.

Gray areas

Some personal insurers allow limited business use, such as driving between job sites, and some commercial insurers will write personally titled vehicles. The answer depends on the insurer, so describe the use plainly when you ask for quotes. If your employees use their own cars for errands, look at hired and non-owned auto as well, and review the liability limits your contracts expect.
